In short
- Semrush is far deeper for keyword, competitor and backlink research, multi-site agency work and marketing beyond SEO.
- Serpkin is built for coding agents: missions with files to change, preview checks, verification and results at 14 and 28 days.
- Semrush lists MCP from Semrush One Starter ($199/month) with 50,000 MCP API units; Serpkin's MCP is on every plan, paid plans proposed at $29 and $79.
- Many developers can use both: Semrush to pick targets, Serpkin for the execution and measurement loop.
Semrush is a broad marketing platform: keyword and competitor research, backlink analysis, position tracking, site audits, AI visibility, content, local, traffic and advertising tools, sold in plans for freelancers up to enterprises. Serpkin does one thing: it gives your coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) the next SEO change for your site, with the files to edit and checks to pass, then verifies the change and measures it. For research breadth and agency work, Semrush is much deeper. For a developer who wants the agent to do the SEO work on a few small sites, Serpkin is the narrower, cheaper (proposed) fit. The two also work well side by side.
Who each tool is best for
Semrush is best for
- Marketers and SEO specialists who research keywords, competitors and markets as a regular part of the job.
- Agencies and growing teams handling many sites, locations or markets. Pro+ monitors 15 websites and Advanced 40 or more, with team users and reporting.
- Teams that need more than SEO: Semrush also sells toolkits for local, content, social, advertising, PR and traffic and market data.
- Brands tracking AI visibility across prompts, with daily prompt tracking on Semrush One plans.
Serpkin is best for
- Developers building with a coding agent who want SEO as missions to implement, not dashboards to read.
- Small sites: 1 on Free, 3 on the proposed Builder plan, 15 on Pro.
- People with no SEO background. Serpkin picks the one change that matters now and says when it is done.
- Anyone who wants to know a fix worked: preview check, verification in production, then a result at 14 and 28 days.
Feature comparison
Semrush entries come from its pricing page, MCP help article and developer docs (checked 2026-10-27). Serpkin entries come from its product and plan limits. "Partly" means the capability exists but is narrower.

| Backlink analysis | Yes | Partly | Semrush: backlink analysis for domains, including referring domains and anchor text. Serpkin: a monthly snapshot of your own site on paid plans, with lost links and link gap. |
| Competitor research | Yes | Partly | Semrush: competitor insights, keyword overlap and market data. Serpkin: organic competitors (3 credits) and keyword gaps (3 per competitor). |
| Site audit | Yes | Yes | Semrush: Site Audit, AI-ready on Starter and up. Serpkin: technical scans of 25, 150 or 500 pages by plan, with Core Web Vitals. |

| Agent can record work | No | Yes | Semrush's MCP help article describes the connection as read-only. Serpkin's agent submits results and requests verification over MCP. |
| Tasks with files to change | No | Yes | Not a listed Semrush feature. Serpkin missions name files from your route map, with steps, snippets and done-when checks. |
| Preview deploy regression check | No | Yes | Not a listed Semrush feature. Serpkin: npx serpkin check compares a preview with production, exit code 1 on regressions. |
| Per-fix result over 14 and 28 days | Partly | Yes | Semrush: Position Tracking and reports show trends. Serpkin: baseline per mission, then 14 and 28 days, read as correlation. |
How each works with a coding agent
Both connect to Claude Code, Codex or Cursor over MCP. Semrush documents a remote server you add in one line:
# Semrush MCP in Claude Code (from Semrush's developer docs), then run /mcp to authenticate
claude mcp add semrush https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp -t http
# Serpkin: detects your agent and framework, maps routes, connects MCP
npx serpkinSemrush MCP gives your agent Semrush data: keyword metrics, rankings, SERP features, competitor overlap, backlinks and, with a Trends API plan, traffic and market data. Every query uses API units, and Semrush suggests asking for specific result counts and filters to save them. Turning the data into a change in your repo is up to you and the agent.
Serpkin MCP returns the change itself. serpkin_next_mission gives one mission with why it matters now, target pages and queries, the source files, ordered steps with snippets, and acceptance checks. The agent implements it, and the rest of the loop is built in:
- 1MissionFiles, steps and checks for one change
- 2ImplementYour agent edits code and runs tests
- 3Preview checkCompare the preview with production
- 4VerifyChecks pass in preview, then production
- 5MeasureBaseline, then 14 and 28 days
Serpkin never merges, deploys or edits your site. You review and ship.
Cost for a solo developer

How Semrush MCP and API usage is metered
- Semrush's MCP help article lists MCP on Semrush One Starter and Pro+, and on the SEO Classic Pro and Guru plans. These include 50,000 MCP API units that refresh on your renewal date.
- For more units you need Semrush One Advanced or SEO Classic Business plus a units package (2, 5, 10 or 20 million units). Each request uses units based on the report type and how much data it returns.
- The Standard API (outside MCP) requires an SEO Business subscription, and units are bought separately. Traffic and market data need a Trends API plan. For SEO Classic plan prices, check current pricing with Semrush.
How Serpkin usage is metered
Missions, scans, preview checks, verification, rank tracking and results are free on every plan. Only research you start uses credits: 2 per keyword seed, 1 per SERP keyword, 3 for competitors, 2 per content brief. Builder includes 500 credits a month (proposed).
Which should you choose?
- Research is a regular part of your work: keywords, competitors, markets, backlinks.
- You manage many sites, locations or clients and need reporting and team users.
- You also want local, content, social or advertising tools in one place.
- You track AI visibility across many prompts every day.
- You ship with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and want SEO as missions your agent implements.
- You run one to a few small sites and want one clear next step, not a dashboard.
- You want preview checks before merge and a measured result after.
- You want to start free, with paid plans proposed at $29 and $79.
Using Semrush and Serpkin together
Semrush is strong at deciding where to compete. Serpkin is built for the execution loop on your codebase. A workable split:
- Pick targets in Semrush. Use keyword research and competitor tools to find the queries and pages worth building.
- Track them in Serpkin with
serpkin_track_keywords, so missions and results aim at the same queries. - Let the agent work missions. Technical fixes, ranking recoveries, AI Overview gaps and content briefs arrive as tasks with files and checks.
- Measure. Read Serpkin's 14- and 28-day results next to Semrush Position Tracking.
With a Semrush plan that includes MCP, you can connect both servers to the same agent. Ask for specific result counts in Semrush queries so the agent doesn't burn through units.
What Serpkin doesn't do
- No browsable keyword, backlink or traffic database; research runs per request for your sites.
- No local SEO, social, advertising or PR tools.
- No client reporting, white-labeling or team seats.
- No ranking promises. A passed check means the change is live and correct, not that rankings will move.
If you need those, Semrush is the better choice, or the research half of a pair. To try the agent loop, start free, or see how Serpkin compares with Ahrefs and with your agent alone.
Questions
What is a good Semrush alternative for developers?
If you need research depth, Semrush is hard to replace. If you mainly want your coding agent to find, implement and verify SEO fixes on a few small sites, an agent-first tool such as Serpkin fits better and costs less (free plan; paid plans proposed at $29 and $79 a month).
Does Semrush have an MCP server?
Yes. Semrush MCP connects assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor and ChatGPT to Semrush data. Its help article lists it on Semrush One Starter and Pro+ and SEO Classic Pro and Guru, with 50,000 MCP API units that refresh on renewal. More units need Advanced or Business plus a units package.
Which Semrush plan includes API access?
Semrush's developer docs say Standard API access is for SEO Toolkit users with a Business subscription, and units are bought separately. Traffic and market data need a Trends API plan. MCP access has its own allowance on the plans listed above.
Can I use Semrush and Serpkin together?
Yes. Use Semrush to choose queries and study competitors, track those queries in Serpkin, and let your agent implement and verify Serpkin missions. Both can connect to the same agent over MCP.
