Ahrefs alternatives for developers

For developers and indie makers who want Ahrefs-style data for less, or a tool that fits a coding-agent workflow. Prices, MCP access, strengths and limits, checked October 2026.

Updated · By the Serpkin team

In short

  • For full research at a lower entry price, SE Ranking (from $129/month with MCP and API credits) and Serpstat (from $69/month; MCP from $129) are the closest Ahrefs alternatives. Semrush matches Ahrefs' depth but not on price.
  • For one site you own, Google Search Console plus Ahrefs Free costs $0 and covers real queries, audits and backlinks.
  • Mangools and Ubersuggest are the low-cost keyword tools; both now have MCP servers, but daily caps are lower.
  • If your coding agent does the SEO work, Serpkin gives it ranked missions, preview checks and measured results. It is not a research suite, so many people pair it with one of the tools above.

The best Ahrefs alternative depends on what you used Ahrefs for. For the same depth of research at a lower entry price, look at SE Ranking (from $129/month, MCP included) or Serpstat (from $69/month). For a cheap keyword tool, Mangools or Ubersuggest. For one site you own, Google Search Console plus Ahrefs' own free plan covers a lot for $0. Semrush is the closest like-for-like suite. If what you actually want is for your coding agent to make and verify SEO changes, Serpkin is built for that loop, and many people pair it with one of the research tools above.

We make Serpkin, so weigh this page with that in mind. Every price and limit below comes from each vendor's own pricing page or docs, checked on 2026-10-29 and listed under sources. Prices change often: treat them as "as of October 2026".

Why developers look for an Ahrefs alternative

Most of the reasons are about fit, not quality. Ahrefs is a strong research tool. The common ones:

  • Agent access starts at $129 a month. Ahrefs MCP is on Lite and higher, metered in API units (200,000 a month on Lite, at least 50 units per call). Starter at $29 doesn't list it.
  • You only need part of it. If you check a few keywords a month and audit one site, a full suite is more than you use.
  • Research isn't the bottleneck. Many indie makers know roughly what to build. What they lack is time to turn findings into code changes and check they worked.

The alternatives, one by one

Semrush: the closest full suite

Who it's for: marketers, SEO teams and agencies who want keyword, competitor and backlink research plus tools for local, content, social and ads in one account.

Strengths: research breadth comparable to Ahrefs, position tracking (500 keywords daily on the SEO and Starter plans, 1,500 on Pro+), AI visibility tracking and an official MCP server that works with Claude Code, Cursor and others. Semrush says the MCP connection is read-only.

Weaknesses: it isn't cheaper than Ahrefs. The pricing page lists MCP from Semrush One Starter, with 50,000 MCP API units that refresh at renewal.

Price: SEO plan from $139/month ($117.33/month billed annually); Semrush One Starter from $199/month ($165.17 billed annually). Free plan and a 7-day trial. See Serpkin vs Semrush and our Semrush alternatives page.

SE Ranking: Ahrefs-style research with MCP on the first plan

Who it's for: freelancers, small agencies and in-house marketers who want rank tracking, audits, keyword and backlink research without Ahrefs' price for agent access.

Strengths: Core includes 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audit pages a month, 100 AI search prompts tracked daily, 25,000 API credits a month and MCP access. Its hosted MCP server covers keyword research, backlinks, domain analysis, SERPs, projects, rank tracking, audits, local data and AI visibility, with setup guides for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

Weaknesses: Core has 1 manager seat. Tracking AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode is a paid add-on ($89/month). SE Ranking says read-only API keys aren't available yet, so a key has full account access.

Price: Core from $129/month, or $103.20/month billed annually (20% off). Growth from $279/month. 14-day free trial, no card required.

Serpstat: lower entry price, API from the Team plan

Who it's for: people who want a research suite on a budget, and developers who want API and MCP access without Enterprise pricing.

Strengths: keyword, competitor, backlink, audit and rank tracking tools. The Team plan adds 3 users, 200,000 API credits a month and MCP ("ChatGPT and Claude integration"). Its MCP server advertises 63 tools, as a hosted version with OAuth or a local one with your API token.

Weaknesses: the Individual plan allows 100 searches a day and includes no API or MCP. MCP calls use API credits per method called.

Price: Individual from $69/month ($50/month billed annually); Team from $129/month ($100/month billed annually). 7-day trial; Serpstat's FAQ says the card check charges $1 and refunds it.

Mangools: simple keyword research

Who it's for: bloggers and indie makers who mostly need keyword ideas, difficulty and a SERP view, in a tool that is quick to learn.

Strengths: KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler in one account. The Basic plan includes 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups a day, 200 tracked keywords and 100,000 backlink rows. There is a free plan, an API, and an MCP server in beta (about 35 tools) whose calls count against your plan's API quota.

Weaknesses: daily caps are low for heavy research, the backlink data is lighter than Ahrefs', and Basic allows 1 session at a time.

Price: Mangools shows prices by region, so check its pricing page for yours. Annual billing saves up to 35%, per its FAQ.

Ubersuggest: the lowest-cost option

Who it's for: solo site owners who want keyword ideas, a site audit and some rank tracking for as little as possible.

Strengths: monthly, annual and lifetime plans. The lowest plan includes 150 reports a day, 1 project and 125 tracked keywords. Its MCP connector has 42 tools; Neil Patel's guide says it works on any Ubersuggest plan and is read-only.

Weaknesses: 1 project on the lowest plan, and no API (its pricing FAQ says there are no API plans), so you can't script it outside an AI client.

Price: shown by region on the pricing page. One-time 7-day free trial on monthly plans.

Google Search Console plus Ahrefs Free: $0 for your own site

Who it's for: anyone with one or a few sites they own, especially new sites.

Strengths: Search Console is a free Google service with your real queries, clicks, indexing status, URL inspection and sitemap submission. Ahrefs Free adds Site Explorer and Site Audit for verified sites (1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once, 5,000 crawl credits a month per project). Community MCP servers connect Search Console to Claude Code or Cursor at no cost beyond Google's API quotas.

Weaknesses: no competitor research and no keyword database: you only see queries you already appear for.

Price: free. Serpkin's free tools (such as the SEO checker) cover single-URL checks without an account.

Serpkin: the execution loop for your coding agent

Who it's for: developers who ship with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and want the agent to do the SEO work, not read reports.

Strengths: ranked missions handed over one at a time, each with the files to change, steps and acceptance checks. Missions are verified on preview and production, then measured at 14 and 28 days against similar pages you didn't touch. MCP server with 28 tools and 5 prompts on every plan, a Claude Code plugin, and npx serpkin setup that runs the first scan.

Weaknesses: it is not a research suite. No browsable keyword or backlink database, no team seats, no client reporting, no AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT or other assistants.

Price: Free ($0: 1 site, 3 missions a month, 25 credits). Builder $29/month and Pro $79/month are proposed; paid plans aren't open yet.

How to choose

Solo developer, one site
  • Start with Search Console and Ahrefs Free: both are $0.
  • Add Mangools or Ubersuggest if you need keyword ideas every week.
  • Add Serpkin Free if you want your agent to turn findings into shipped, checked changes.
Agency or consultant
  • Stay with Ahrefs, or move to Semrush or SE Ranking for client projects, seats and reporting.
  • SE Ranking Core includes 10 projects and MCP; Serpstat Team adds 3 users and API credits.
  • Serpkin is not built for client work: no seats or white-label reports.
Content team
  • Semrush or Ahrefs for topic research and content tools.
  • SE Ranking if you want its content marketing tools at a lower entry price.
  • Mangools for a lighter keyword workflow.
Agent-first workflow
  • Serpkin for missions your agent implements, preview checks and measured results.
  • Add a research MCP (SE Ranking, Semrush, Serpstat or Ahrefs) if the agent needs market data mid-task.
  • Watch metered units or credits: agents make many calls.

If you research keywords and competitors every week, a full suite (Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking) is the better choice than anything narrower, Serpkin included.

Cost example: one site, one developer, one year

List prices as of October 2026. Annual figures use each vendor's annual billing where it publishes one.

Yearly cost of common setups for a solo developer
SetupYearly costWhat you get

Serpkin Free$01 site, 3 missions a month, MCP
Serpkin Builder (proposed)$2903 sites, 30 missions a month, 500 credits
Serpstat Individual, annual$600Research, 100 searches a day, no MCP
Serpstat Team, annual$1,200Research, MCP and 200,000 API credits a month
SE Ranking Core, annual$1,238.40Research, 10 projects, MCP and 25K API credits a month
Ahrefs Lite, monthly billing$1,548Research, MCP and 200,000 API units a month
Semrush One Starter, annual$1,982.04Research, MCP and 50,000 MCP API units

A common pairing for an agent-first developer: Search Console (free) for real data, Serpkin for the execution loop, and a research subscription only in the months you plan new content.

Where Serpkin fits

Serpkin doesn't replace a research suite. It answers a different question: what should my agent change next, and did it work? A typical loop:

Terminal
# In your site's repository: connects your agent, maps routes,
# runs the first scan and prints your first mission
npx serpkin

# Before merging the agent's change, compare the preview with production
npx serpkin check https://my-branch.vercel.app

Missions cover technical fixes, ranking and content work, free tool pages and comparison pages when the search results call for them, and directory listings you submit yourself. Serpkin never merges, deploys or edits your site; your agent edits the code and you ship. If you want to try it, start free.

Questions

What is the best free alternative to Ahrefs?

For a site you own, Google Search Console plus Ahrefs' own free plan. Search Console shows your real queries, clicks and indexing; Ahrefs Free gives Site Explorer and Site Audit for verified sites. Neither shows competitor data.

Is SE Ranking as good as Ahrefs?

For rank tracking, audits and everyday keyword and backlink research, SE Ranking covers what most small teams need, and its Core plan ($129/month as of October 2026) includes MCP and API credits. Ahrefs has more history and deeper research reports on its higher plans.

What is cheaper than Ahrefs?

Ubersuggest and Mangools are the cheapest paid options for keyword research. Serpstat Individual starts at $69/month. SE Ranking Core matches Ahrefs Lite's $129 but includes MCP and API credits. Search Console and Ahrefs Free cost nothing.

Which Ahrefs alternative works with Claude Code?

SE Ranking, Semrush, Serpstat, Mangools and Ubersuggest all document MCP servers you can add to Claude Code, on different plans. Serpkin's MCP server is on every plan, including Free, and returns missions for your agent to implement rather than research data.

Can I use Ahrefs and Serpkin together?

Yes. Use Ahrefs (or another research tool) to pick targets, track those queries in Serpkin, and let your agent implement and verify Serpkin missions. Both connect to the same agent over MCP.
