In short
- SE Ranking is the closest Semrush alternative for less: Core is $129/month as of October 2026, with MCP and 25K API credits included. Serpstat starts lower, at $69/month, with MCP from $129.
- Ahrefs matches Semrush's research depth; its MCP also starts at $129/month (Lite).
- For keyword research only, Mangools and Ubersuggest cost far less. For your own site's data, Search Console is free.
- If your coding agent does the SEO work, Serpkin turns it into ranked missions with preview checks and measured results. Keep a research suite if you research every week.
If you want what Semrush does for less, SE Ranking is the closest match (Core from $129/month, with MCP and API credits included), and Serpstat is cheaper still (from $69/month). Ahrefs is the like-for-like research rival, at a similar price. For keyword research only, Mangools or Ubersuggest cost far less. For one site you own, Google Search Console is free. And if you build with a coding agent and want it to ship and verify SEO changes, Serpkin covers that loop; it is not a research suite, so it often runs next to one of these.
We make Serpkin, so read this with that bias in mind. Prices and limits come from each vendor's own pricing page or docs, checked on 2026-10-29 and listed under sources. They change often, so read them as "as of October 2026".

Why people look for a Semrush alternative
- You pay for toolkits you don't open. Semrush spans SEO, local, content, social, ads and market data. A developer with one SaaS site often uses a slice of the SEO part.
- Agent access sits on a higher plan. MCP on the pricing page starts at $199/month, and the connection is read-only: your agent gets data, not tasks.
- You need fewer tracked keywords. 500 daily keywords on the SEO plan is generous for a small site that cares about 30 queries.
If you use Semrush's breadth every week, or run SEO for clients across many markets, switching may cost you more time than it saves money. Semrush is the better choice there.
The alternatives, one by one
Ahrefs: equal depth, a cheaper way in
Who it's for: SEO specialists, content teams and agencies whose work centers on keywords, backlinks and competitors rather than ads or social.
Strengths: a large keyword and backlink index, Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker. Lite tracks 750 keywords with 6 months of history; Standard 2,000 with 2 years. Ahrefs Free gives Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you verify.
Weaknesses: not a cheaper route to agent access. Ahrefs MCP is on Lite and higher, metered in API units (200,000 a month on Lite, at least 50 per call). Extra users cost $40 to $80 a month depending on plan.
Price: Starter from $29/month, Lite from $129/month, Standard from $249/month. Annual billing saves up to 17%. See Serpkin vs Ahrefs and Ahrefs alternatives.
SE Ranking: the closest Semrush alternative on price
Who it's for: small agencies, freelancers and in-house marketers who want rank tracking, audits, keyword and backlink research, local and AI visibility in one suite.
Strengths: Core gives 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audit pages a month and 100 AI search prompts tracked daily. API credits (25,000 a month) and MCP access are included, so your agent can query it from Claude Code, Codex or Cursor without a separate API plan.
Weaknesses: Core has 1 manager seat (Growth has 3). Tracking AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode costs $89/month as an add-on. Read-only API keys aren't available yet, per SE Ranking's docs.
Price: Core from $129/month or $103.20/month billed annually; Growth from $279/month. 14-day trial without a card.
Serpstat: a full suite with the lowest entry price
Who it's for: budget-conscious teams and developers who want API access and MCP without an enterprise contract.
Strengths: keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, site audit and rank tracking. Team includes 3 users, 200,000 API credits a month and MCP, with 63 tools in its MCP server. You can run its MCP hosted (OAuth) or locally with your API token.
Weaknesses: Individual allows 100 searches a day and has no API or MCP. MCP queries use API credits based on the method called.
Price: Individual from $69/month ($50 billed annually); Team from $129/month ($100 billed annually). 7-day trial.
Mangools: when you only need keywords and SERPs
Who it's for: indie makers and bloggers who want quick keyword ideas, difficulty and SERP checks without learning a large platform.
Strengths: five focused tools (KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler). Basic includes 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups a day and 200 tracked keywords. A free plan, a REST API, and an MCP server in beta whose tool calls draw from your API quota.
Weaknesses: no ads, social or local toolkits, lighter backlink data, low daily caps for heavy research. Some MCP tools create trackings or monitors that use paid quota.
Price: shown by region on the pricing page. Annual billing saves up to 35%, per the FAQ.
Ubersuggest: cheapest paid option
Who it's for: a solo owner of one site who wants keyword ideas, an audit and basic rank tracking for the least money.
Strengths: monthly, annual or lifetime plans; 150 reports a day and 125 tracked keywords on the lowest plan. A read-only MCP connector with 42 tools, available on any plan according to Neil Patel's guide.
Weaknesses: 1 project on the lowest plan and no API.
Price: shown by region on the pricing page. One-time 7-day free trial on monthly plans.
Google Search Console and free tools
Who it's for: every site owner, whatever else they buy.
Strengths: Search Console is a free Google service with your real queries, clicks, indexing reports, URL inspection and sitemaps. Its API has published quotas (for example, 2,000 URL inspections a day per site), and community MCP servers let your agent query it. For single-URL checks, Serpkin's free tools need no account.
Weaknesses: only your own sites, and only queries you already show up for. No keyword ideas or competitor data.
Price: free.
Serpkin: for when your agent does the work
Who it's for: developers building with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor who want SEO to arrive as tasks, not dashboards.
Strengths: one ranked mission at a time with files to change, steps and checks; verification on preview and production; results at 14 and 28 days compared with similar pages you didn't change. Unlike a read-only research MCP, your agent also reports back through Serpkin's MCP (submit, verify, dismiss with a reason). 28 tools and 5 prompts on every plan, plus a Claude Code plugin.
Weaknesses: no browsable research databases, no local, social or ads tools, no team seats, and no AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT or other assistants.
Price: Free ($0: 1 site, 3 missions a month, 25 credits). Builder $29/month and Pro $79/month, both proposed and not open yet.
How to choose
- Search Console first. It's free and shows what Google already sends you.
- A low-cost keyword tool (Mangools or Ubersuggest) if you plan new pages often.
- Serpkin Free if you want your agent to ship and verify the fixes.
- Keep Semrush if clients need local, ads or social in the same reports.
- SE Ranking or Serpstat Team for SEO-only client work at a lower price.
- Ahrefs if backlink research drives most of your work.
- Semrush or Ahrefs for topic research and content planning at depth.
- SE Ranking if its content tools and tracking cover your needs for less.
- Serpkin for the execution and measurement loop.
- SE Ranking (MCP on Core) or Serpstat (MCP on Team) if the agent needs research data too.
- Semrush MCP if you already pay for a plan that includes it.
Cost example: one SaaS site for a year
List prices as of October 2026, using annual billing where the vendor publishes it.
| Setup | Yearly cost | Agent access |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console only | $0 | Community MCP servers |
| Search Console + Serpkin Free | $0 | Serpkin MCP (missions) |
| Search Console + Serpkin Builder (proposed) | $290 | Serpkin MCP (missions) |
| Serpstat Team, annual | $1,200 | MCP, 200,000 API credits a month |
| SE Ranking Core, annual | $1,238.40 | MCP, 25K API credits a month |
| Semrush SEO, annual | $1,407.96 | MCP not listed on the pricing page |
| Semrush One Starter, annual | $1,982.04 | MCP, 50,000 MCP API units |
One practical pattern: run a 7- or 14-day trial of a research suite while you plan the quarter's pages, then keep only the tool you used.
Where Serpkin fits
Serpkin is the part after research: your agent asks for the next mission, implements it, checks the preview, and Serpkin verifies and measures after you deploy. If you need to decide which markets to compete in, a research suite does that better. Many people use both.
# Connect Serpkin to Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and run the first scan
npx serpkin
# In Claude Code with the Serpkin plugin: get the next mission and implement it
/serpkin:nextSerpkin doesn't merge, deploy or promise rankings: a passed check means the change is live and correct. To try it on your site, start free, or compare the SEO MCP servers side by side.
Questions
What is the best free alternative to Semrush?
Google Search Console for your own site: it's free and shows your real queries, clicks and indexing. Pair it with Ahrefs Free for site audits and backlinks on verified sites. Neither gives competitor research.
Does Semrush have an MCP server?
Yes. Semrush MCP is read-only and works with Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT and others. Its help article lists Semrush One Starter and Pro+ and SEO Classic Pro and Guru, with 50,000 MCP API units that refresh on renewal.
Is SE Ranking cheaper than Semrush?
Yes, as of October 2026: SE Ranking Core is $129/month (or $103.20/month billed annually) versus $139/month for Semrush's SEO plan, and Core includes MCP and API credits, which Semrush lists from $199/month.
Is Ahrefs or Semrush better?
Both are deep research suites. Ahrefs is often chosen for backlink and keyword research; Semrush adds toolkits for local, content, social, ads and market data. Pick by the work you do most, and try each on your own site first.
Can Serpkin replace Semrush?
For a small site that mainly needs technical fixes, tracked keywords and a measured result per change, it can cover the day-to-day. It does not replace Semrush's databases, market data or marketing toolkits.
